How to Choose Parts For a New Computer

By Broderick Bell Blog at 2011-01-05 05:54:33
Building a computer for the first time can seem like an impossible task, but in reality it's not that hard. The benefit to building your own is that you save money and can customize it to your exact specifications. Choosing the right parts is fun and rewarding when you do it right.

As you might expect, it is common for computers with very low initial purchase prices to have among the highest Total Cost of Ownership. Accounting people at big firms have understood this for many years which is why you will never see a Fortune 500 company using any of the models of discount computers that you will see on the shelf at Best Buy, Circuit City or any of the other big box stores.

If you are looking for the best computer peripherals offline, it is recommended for you to check whether you are comfortable with the keyboard, the mouse, and the headset. This is because you will be using this machine for a significant length of time. The peripherals mentioned above may seem simple but they are essential in letting your computer function well. In the laptop computer, the said peripherals may not be a necessity but you need to make sure that you can easily use the pointing device integrated on it.

However, if you'll be gaming, watching movies, or if you like to multi-task, get the fastest processor you can afford. Make sure it can handle the games you want to play - if you're shopping for your computer in a store like Best Buy, write down the requirements (specifications) for the games you want play and bring them with you to the store.

What you can do with a bad processor a lot of the time is set it to run slower, and while it may not be running at full speed, it works well enough to pass the tests. But the parts are still bad! Sure, they may work OK for a while (maybe just long enough to make it through the warranty period) but they have more little "glitches" and end up breaking down sooner.

Optical mice have several advantages over mechanical mice. There are no moving parts to break or otherwise cause problems. The need for maintenance is greatly reduced as the bottoms have no openings or rollers to collect lint. Although mice generally aren't heavy, the elimination of the ball and roller mechanism allows an optical mouse to be much lighter than a comparable mechanical mouse.

RAM - This is the temporary space the computer uses when accessing your programs and information stored on your computer. This can be thought of as a desk, the information you are currently working on is put on the desk and is removed when you are finished. The more RAM your computer has, the more information you can access quickly at the same time.

Almost as important as the monitor, is the sound system and speakers. Good sound on your computer can really make a difference, especially if you play a lot of games and listen to a lot of music and watch movies. Desktop speakers have gone down significantly in price and in combination with a good sound card your experience will be complete. I recommend a sound card from "Creative" called Sound blaster Audigy.

You should follow these tips. However, if you still aren't sure what computer to go with, then the best place to go to is your local computer store. These often have a great knowledge and should be able to tell you what you want to satisfy your needs. You should definitely visit if you have any problems.
