Opening a small business is both challenging and rewarding (if you do it right). It takes a lot of planning, organizing and drive. There is no guarantee for business success but certain things you do will increase your opportunity for success.

These are questions you need to answer before you startup your business. The costs for developing and hosting a web site are minimal and you can literally begin bringing in customers within days instead of weeks. However, if the type of store you want to run isn't appropriate for a virtual venue, you can find other ways to secure funding. Too many people open a small business because they have expertise in a particular industry. For example, a hairdresser opens up a salon, a mechanic opens up an auto repair shop etc. The most expert technician, expert or operator in business will virtually starve, unless he or she learns to market and sell!

Online businesses that specialize in building organizations of independent business owners, oftentimes called network marketing, are in the opinion of this author as some of the best ways to create an income that is not dependent solely on your own efforts. These businesses specialize in a particular product, require little or no investment, offer free training and support, and have their own unique compensation plans.

Most businesses simply create a web site and hope for the best. Usually the best doesn't happen and hope turns to dismay. This doesn't have to happen to your business. With a little bit of planning and some knowledge of online marketing techniques your business can benefit greatly. Think about it, it wasn't but a few short years ago that only the big corporations could afford to advertise and dominate the media, but now you can do the same thing--for free!

Save yourself time and expense by working with someone who has gone through this before. This should be someone that can point out additional opportunities to take tax deductions and walk you through things like marketing, advertising, and operations when you are ready to start selling. Additionally, if you ever need to hire someone, either an employee or contractor, don't settle for anything less than excellent performance. Receiving less than excellent performance from paid labor will kill your small business.
